This guide includes all European airlines that accept dogs in cabin, what to expect, and a few surprises along the way (hola Vueling!).

Airlines that allow dogs in cabin

There are many European airlines that allow animals in the cabin these days. These include large airlines such as Lufthansa, Air France or KLM, but some do not accept animals – mostly low-cost companies such as Ryanair or Wizzair, although the Spanish Vueling is an exception in this case.

That’s exactly why the Pet Abroad tem put together this complete list of European airlines that actually let your dog fly in the cabin. You’ll also find the size requiements, weight limits and fees.

And if your dog is too big to fly in cabin, don’t worry – the second and third part of this guide also covers airline rules for dogs traveling in hold and cargo. Choose the section you are interested in here:

Which airlines allow dogs in cabin

More and more airlines in Europe are becoming pet-friendly – and with the rise in pet travel, that number is likely to grow even further.

In this table, we will focus on the most popular and largest airlines where you can safely take your dog or cat on board and two big ones which do not accept dogs.

But right below the table you can find a complete list of all European airlines that transport dogs.

Weight and carrier size limits for pets flying in cabin across EU airlines

For dogs in cabin flights, most European airlines have a limit of 8 kilograms including the bag. The reasons are simple – it’s for safety and size, as your dog’s travel bag must fit under the seat.

Airlines don’t all stick to the same cabin bag sizes, so it’s really important to double-check the exact carrier dimensions allowed for your flight before you go. For traveling in a cabin you can have either a soft or a hard cover carrier. We recommend the soft one as it is a little bit more flexible and comfortable for you and your pet. However, don’t let the weight limit fool you; even with a flexible bag, fitting a 7.5 kg dog into these strict dimensions can be nearly impossible, as we explored in our article on the 8kg cabin limit myth. Also check out our pick of TOP 5 in cabin bags for your pet.

Pet in cabin Europe flights fees: What to expect

You can check for the exact pet-in-cabin fees by the biggest European airlines in the table above here.

Each airline sets its own pet fee, and in most cases, the price stays the same no matter if you’re flying with a dog or a cat – as long as pets are allowed in the cabin.

You usually pay the fee once per flight, and within Europe, it doesn’t really change much depending on the destination. Read all about the flight ticket prices here.

TOP pet-friendly airlines in Europe

If you’re looking for airlines that allow dogs in cabin and make flying with your pet easier and less stressful, here are some of the best-rated options in Europe:

🥇 1. Vueling

We have only had the best experiences with Vueling. We recommend that you book a seat for your pet as soon as possible, which you can do easily and online when booking your flight, where you just need to add the extra service pet in cabin.

We’ve had a few pleasant surprises — when the flight isn’t full, the airline sometimes assigns you a seat with extra space. It’s not guaranteed, but definitely a nice bonus when it happens!

🐾 — Vueling pet policy here — ✈️

🥈 2. Lufthansa

Lufthansa is usually one of the smoothest options for pet travel. We’ve flown with them multiple times and their check-in staff are well-trained when it comes to handling pet bookings.

One thing to keep in mind: as well as a few other airlines they weigh the pet together with the carrier, so make sure you’re not slightly over the 8 kg limit — they do check! 😉

Check out our article about Lufthansa’s pet policy here.

🥉 3. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines

KLM usually makes the process pretty straightforward — you can add your pet online during booking, so there’s no need to call or deal with extra steps later.

From our experience, check-in staff know the rules and are happy to help — just make sure you’re under the 8 kg cabin limit, they really do weigh it! Read about KLM airline pet policy here.

Tip: Extra pet-friendly & more high-end options

Flying with pets is becoming more of a standard than an exception, and the market is reacting to this change. Nowadays, there are many airlines, such as K9 Jets or Bark Air, whose primary focus is pet travel. It’s not for everyone, but it’s definitely worth checking out!

What does “pet in hold” mean and is it right for your dog

Traveling “in hold” simply means your dog flies in the same plane as you — just in a special, climate-controlled section of the baggage area. It’s quiet, pressurized, and designed for safe animal transport. For many medium and large dogs, this is a common option, unless you travel in Italy, where a change occurred in May 2025 and larger dogs can travel in the cabin.

If your dog is used to a crate and in good health, the experience can be smoother than you’d expect. We in the Pet Abroad tem have flown this way with our dogs a few times, and with the right prep, you can do it too.

🐾 — FAQs about pet travel here — ✈️

Flights in Europe that allow pets in hold

1. Lufthansa

Lufthansa is known for excellent care when flying pets in hold. Although you’ll hand over your pet before security, trained staff take over from there – and Frankfurt airport is one of the better hubs for animal handling on connecting flights.

We also found great feedbacks on Reddit: “Lufthansa seems to be one of the best airlines for flying pets… Frankfurt has a great pet lounge”.

Read our guide about Lufthansa pet travel here.

2. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines

KLM has a solid reputation when it comes to flying pets in the hold. Their booking process is clear, and at big hubs like Amsterdam Schiphol, check-in for pets is usually smooth and well-organized. The staff know how to handle animals with care, and the weight allowance is generous — up to 75 kg including the crate.

We’ve heard from several Pet Abroad travelers that their dogs arrived calm, safe, and well cared for. And honestly, knowing your dog is in good hands makes all the difference!

3. Air France

Air France is often mentioned as a solid choice for traveling with pets in hold. They allow dogs up to 75 kg (crate included) to fly in a temperature-controlled section of the hold. Booking is straightforward (just make sure to do it at least 24 hours in advance), and their staff is known for being kind and helpful — especially to nervous pet owners.

We came across a few stories from travelers on long-haul routes saying the process was smooth and their pets were well looked after from start to finish.

Pet in hold rules, restrictions, and what you’ll need

Flying your dog in the hold takes a bit more prep than cabin travel, but it’s totally doable. You’ll need a solid crate that meets airline rules, your dog has to be healthy and up to date on vaccines, and also keep in mind that some breeds (like short-nosed dogs) aren’t allowed.

Also most airlines have set a max weight (usually up to 75 kgs including the crate) and definitely require advance booking. And here’s something many people don’t expect: if it’s too hot or too cold at the airport, your dog might not be allowed to fly in the hold that day. It’s all about safety.

🐾 ✈️ 🐾

When and why to choose cargo

Sometimes, flying cargo isn’t just an option — it’s the only way your dog can travel. If your pup is too big for the cabin or in hold (which usually caps out around 75 kg including the crate), cargo is what’s left. And while it can sound intimidating, it’s more common than you might think.

Pet cargo services are designed with animals in mind. From trained handlers to climate-controlled spaces, the system is built to move animals safely over long distances — whether it’s across Europe or overseas.

If you’re relocating or flying a route that doesn’t allow pets in the cabin or hold, cargo might be your only choice. It’s not right for every dog — some breeds or older pets can have a tougher time — but for healthy dogs used to a crate, it can be a safe way to travel.

How pet cargo flights work step by step

Booking: Contact the airline’s cargo division (or an approved agent).

Prep & paperwork: Make sure your dog has a right IATA crate, valid EU pet passport, and a health certificate.

Drop-off: Bring your dog to the cargo terminal at the agreed time.

The flight: Your pet travels in a pressurized, temperature-controlled section of the hold — separate from luggage.

Arrival: After landing, pick up your dog at the cargo facility, not the passenger baggage area.

Pet cargo airlines and other services in Europe

Airlines like Lufthansa and KLM actually run their own pet cargo services, with proper animal areas at big hubs like Frankfurt or Schiphol. It takes some stress out of the journey, especially if your dog’s flying long-haul.

If you’re not flying with your dog or you’ve got a more complicated trip ahead, it can really help to go through a specialist. Companies like PetAir UK or Airpets sort out the paperwork and logistics — some even offer door-to-door service, which saves a lot of hassle and stress.

What to know before booking pet cargo

Before you book, check if your dog’s breed, age, or health could be an issue — especially for snub-nosed breeds or older dogs. Also make sure your crate meets IATA standards, and that you’ve got all the documents lined up (some countries require extra paperwork).

TIP from the Pet Abroad Team: cargo bookings usually close 3 to 7 days before departure, so don’t leave it to the last minute.

1. Overview of Finnair pet policy

Accepted Finnair pet travel options:

✅ In cabin: Yes (dogs allowed if total weight incl. carrier is max 8 kg; rabbits, tortoises, hedgehogs also accepted only from EU)

✅ Checked baggage: Yes, dogs, cats, ferrets up to 75 kg incl. carrier; 50 kg on Norra flights; rabbits, tortoises, hedgehogs only from EU

✅ Cargo: Required for heavier pets or destinations like UK, Hong Kong, UAE, Australia

Cabin weight limit: Max 8 kg (incl. soft carrier or crate)

Carrier size (in-cabin):

Soft carrier: max 55 × 40 × 23 cm (Finnair) / 55 × 40 × 20 cm (Norra)

Hard carrier: max 35 × 30 × 20 cm (Finnair & Norra)

Minimum age: Not officially stated; recommend at least 8 weeks (check destination requirements)

Main transit hub: Helsinki Airport, Finland

Booking deadline: As early as possible; limited space per flight (2 pets)

Link to the Finnair website

2. Finnair pet in cabin travel

Price for Finnair dog in cabin is € 60 per flight (in a case you book the flight for your pet less than 6 days before the planned departure, it costs € 65) when it comes to European flights. If you travel outside of Europe, incl. Middle East, the price rise up to € 120 (/€ 130 if you book your pet 6 or less days before departure).

As all European airlines even Finnair accepts only IATA approved dog carriers with solid bottom and good ventilation. We recommend soft pet carriers – you can check our TOP 5 options here. Weight limit for the box including your pet is 8 kg and you can carry up to 2 pets there as long as they fit and the weight does not exceed the limit.

Finnair allows a maximum of two pets per flight, with one pet carrier per customer, so booking early gives you the best chance of availability.

Finnair pet carrier size limits

Flights operated by Finnair: soft bags 55 x 40 x 23 cm/ hard carriers 35 x 30 x 20 cm

Flights operated by Norra: soft bags 55 x 40 x 20 cm/ hard carrier 35 x 30 x 20 cm

Upcoming changes to pet travel in cabin in 2026

There are big chnages happening this year! Forget the 8 kg limit because Finnair is moving to a measuring tape strategy.

Our inside sources confirm that weight is becoming secondary to a strict 25 cm height limit for pets in the cabin. If your dog is taller than 25 cm, they are out, no matter how light they are.

This means you cannot fly with dogs or cats that exceed the height limit, and the result is that only the smallest of pets can travel with you, and even then, only barely. PetAbroad founder Markéta has already had her first taste of this, and you can read about her experience in the article here.

💡As for what we think about this change? We are 100% for pet safety, but we believe there are many other ways to ensure that, rather than further limiting the size of allowed pets, especially when the rest of the world is moving in a completely different direction.

3. Finnair flying with pets in hold or cargo

Pet flights in hold or cargo require a little more preparation than pet flights in cabin, so we have prepared all the important information for you right here.

a) Finnair flying with pets in hold

When booking pet in hold, make sure to do it as soon as possible (at least 7 days before departure). Finnair usually confirms a reservation within 2 days, for USA fligths at least 2 weeks before departure. If it is a longer flight with 1 or more connections, keep in mind that you need to have at least 3 hours between flights.

Finnair also put limits on the number of animals you can travel with: on flights operated by Finnair it’s 2 pets per person, on Norra flights it is only one. Also, it’s not possible to travel with a pet in hold if your ticket includes flights operated by other airlines than Finnair or Norra.

Weight limit for pet in the hold is maximum 75 kg (Finnair) or 50kg (Norra) incl. the container.

Finnair dog in hold pricing

Flight within Europe: € 120

Intercontinental flights: € 600/ $ 650

Tips for traveling with your pet in hold

As the space in holdcraft is air-conditioned and for safety reasons the temperature is above 10 degrees Celsius, we definitely recommend packing blankets for your dog in the crate. It is also important that your dog knows the crate well, so training is half the battle won.

The dog should also have access to water, so a sipper water bottle is a great choice as long as it knows how to use it. 🙂

b) Finnair pet cargo

You can ship your pet as a cargo via Finnair Cargo, the reservation must be done via forwarding company, eg Travelcargo – Pet Express.

Finnair Cargo only transports animals on direct selected routes, not via partner airlines. If your destination is Finland, pets can only be transported through Helsinki Airport.

All the bookings for pets are confirmed manually so make sure you receive the confirmation – you can also check it in “Manage booking”.

How to book a flight for your pet in cabin for Business

If you are flying Business and want to take your pet with you, the booking looks a little bit different compare to Economy class.

The reason is that Finnair needs to confirm if there’s no passenger flying Business with allergies as the cabin space is limited. So booking your pet in cabin for Business looks like this:

Book your flight ticket.

Call Finnair to add “pet in cabin” to your booking.

Provide necessary information such as type of animal, breed, etc.

Wait for the confirmation.

Pay the fee (you can do it online via link).

Once confirmed you can look forward to your flight!

How to book dog in hold with Finnair

Book your flight ticket.

Contact Finnair within 24 hours to add “pet in hold” via chat/by phone.

Provide the required information (about pet, breed, carrier size, weight,..).

Wait for the confirmation.

Pay the fee (usually via sent link).

Receive confirmation.

Done!

5. Required documents

On Finnair flights within Europe, you’ll need an EU Pet Passport. For flights to or from other regions, an EU Health Certificate is usually required. If you’re unsure which documents you need, check out our guide to pet travel documents .

If you’re traveling to Finland, Malta, Ireland, or Norway, make sure your dog has been treated for tapeworm. Also some destinations may require extra vaccines, even within Europe, even though travel rules are often the same across the EU, it can still happen that specific countries may have additional requirements.

The good thing about Finnair flying with pets is that you do not need a fit-to-fly certificate, which can make the process a bit easier.

6. Recommended travel gear

For Finnair flights for pets in cabin we recommend soft side bags:

EQUICANI Hundetasche

Wakytu Dog Bag

Amazon Basics pet carrier

If you travel with Finnair more often, it’s good to think about the flights operated by Norra, which has slightly different size dimensions, get a pet carrier that fits the Norra criteria. For that reason one of the best options is the Amazon Basics pet carrier.

Do not forget about other important accessories such as water and food bowls and calming aids.

7. Tips from travelers

Contact Finnair in advance to confirm availability for your pet – via online chat or phone. The number of animals allowed in the cabin is limited (2 per flight), so make sure one of those spots is yours!

It’s also important to check who operates your flight. Pet carrier size limits differ slightly depending on whether the flight is operated by Finnair or by Norra. Norra allows slightly smaller carriers (maximum height 20 cm instead of 23 cm).

Whenever possible, choose a direct flight. Avoiding connections and layovers can make the journey much less stressful for your dog

8. Pros & Cons of choosing Finnair for pet travel

Finnair is a solid option if you’re flying within Europe with a dog. Small pets are allowed in the cabin on most routes, and there’s no need for a fit-to-fly certificate. Booking is straightforward once space is confirmed, and Finnair’s network covers many big European destinations.

That said, there are some cons. First of all only two pets are allowed in the cabin per flight. Also if your flight is operated by Norra, the allowed carrier height is slightly smaller, which can catch people off guard. Costs are also on the higher end, especially for larger dogs that need to travel as checked baggage or cargo.

❌ Checked baggage: No

Cabin weight limit: Max 8 kg

Carrier size in-cabin: 55 cm (L) x 40 cm (W) x 23 cm (H), only soft-sided bags

Minimum age: At least 12 weeks or 15 weeks on flgihts to Germany

2. Eurowings pet in cabin

Eurowings pet in cabin service is limited to cats and dogs only with max weight 8 kg, including their carrier (maximum dimensions are 55 x 40 x 23 cm) and each passenger can bring only one pet carrier with him.

This airline strictly prohibits hard crates, so always choose soft sided bags. Inside the carrier, your dog or cat must be able to stand, turn, and lie down in a natural position. During the flight, the bag must remain closed and stowed under the seat in front of the passenger. Animals are not allowed on seats or in the laps of passengers.

Eurowings permits snub-nosed breeds like Pugs or French Bulldogs in the cabin, of course in the case they meet the weight criteria.

3. Eurowings pets in hold or cargo

The Eurowings airline does not transport pets in the hold or as cargo. So if your pet is bigger than 8 kg and cannot travel with you in cabin, you can’t take your dog or cat on Eurowings flights.

4. Booking process

The easiest way to book a flight ticket for your pet is selecting the pet option during an online reservation under the “Passengers” section.

If you already have booking, the service can be added via the “Manage Booking” tool or through the call center.

The fee starts at 60 EUR per flight segment. Passengers must also download and complete the Eurowings “transportation of a dog/cat in the cabin” form and present it at the check-in counter before departure.

5. Required documents

As mentioned in the previous paragraph, every passenger must present a signed copy of the “Transportation of an animal in the cabin” form at the check-in desk. This document confirms the pet meets all health and safety requirements.

For travel inside the EU, you’ll need a valid EU Pet Passport, microchip, and rabies vaccination as these are mandatory. Also note that while the general minimum age is 12 weeks, pets flying to or from Germany must be at least 15 weeks old.

Eurowings does not transport pets to or from the UK (read all about UK pet travel here) or Ireland.

6. Recommended travel gear

When you’re flying with Eurowings, you don’t want to overpack, but you definitely need a few essentials to keep your pet comfortable and make sure you don’t get turned away at the gate.

Here is the basic gear you will actually need:

A reliable soft-sided carrier: This is your most important piece of gear. Eurowings only allows soft bags in the cabin, and they are super strict about the 55 x 40 x 23 cm dimensions since it has to fit under the seat in front of you. It needs to be scratch-proof, well-ventilated, and completely leak-proof. If you are looking for the perfect one, check out our roundup of the TOP 5 soft carrier bags that fit these rules perfectly.

Absorbent pee pads: Even if your dog or cat is perfectly house-trained, airport stress or flight delays can cause accidents. Line the bottom of the carrier with a good pee pad and throw two or three extra ones into your backpack just in case you need a quick swap.

Collapsible bowls and a travel bottle: Regular bowls are too bulky for travel. Pack a flat-folding silicone bowl and a leak-proof water bottle so you can easily give your pet a drink at the terminal before boarding or right after you land.

Something that smells like home: The loud jet engines and cabin pressure can be pretty scary for pets. Tossing a familiar blanket or one of your old t-shirts into the carrier helps them feel safe.

7. Tips from travelers

Online check-in is restricted for pet owners, so it’s good to arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure. You must show your pet and all documents at the physical counter.

To reduce stress, avoid feeding your pet a large meal immediately before the flight. Read all about feeding pets when flying in our article here. Also make sure that your dog or cat are well-exercised before the flight.

8. Pros & Cons of choosing Eurowings for pet travel

Transparent fixed pricing starting at 60 EUR.

Simple online booking process directly during flight reservation.

If you are thinking about taking a flight with your pet and want to choose EasyJet, unfortunately there is no such an option. EasyJet is a strict no-pet airline for standard domestic animals.

Official EasyJet pet policy overview

EasyJet does not allow pets on any of their flights. You cannot travel with a dog, cat, or any other regular animal in the cabin or in the cargo hold. There is no option to pay an extra fee to add a pet to your booking.

The one and only exception to this rule is for certified assistance and guide dogs. If you want to travel with a standard pet, you must choose a different airline. You can find all the pet-friendly airlines here.

— 🐾 Let’s Continue 🐾 —

Rules for pets in cabin and cargo hold

The no pet policy does not only applies to in cabin travel, but also for in hold and cargo. EasyJet simply is a low-cost airline and does not operate cargo facilities for live animals. Because they completely lack this specialized infrastructure, placing a dog or cat in the belly of the plane is impossible.

Since you cannot use the hold and you are not allowed to bring an easyjet pet in cabin, there are simply zero transport options for standard pets on these flights.

Flying with an approved EasyJet assistance dog

The single exception to the airline’s rule applies to a certified easyjet assistance dog. These legally recognized dogs are allowed to travel in the cabin free of charge, sitting on the floor at your feet.

However, you must know that this privilege does not extend to emotional support or therapy animals. EasyJet does not recognize emotional support dogs under any circumstances. They classify them as standard easyjet dogs on board, meaning they are completely banned from flights.

To legally qualify for travel, your guide or assistance dog must be officially trained and registered by a recognized organization, such as Assistance Dogs International (ADI) or the International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF).

Pet friendly alternatives to EasyJet

Since EasyJet operates heavily in the UK, you must understand British pet travel rules. UK regulations strictly prohibit pets from entering the country in the cabin. Any dog or cat flying into the United Kingdom must arrive as manifest cargo, meaning you need traditional carriers like British Airways or KLM.

To avoid the high costs and stress of cargo flights, the best alternatives for UK routes are surface transport options. Booking the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle or a pet-friendly ferry cabin with Brittany Ferries or DFDS allows your pet to stay safely by your side for the entire journey.

If your travel is entirely within mainland Europe, your options are definitely better. Airlines such as Vueling, or Air France are great pet-friendly alternatives that welcome small dogs directly in the cabin.

While Ryanair doesn’t allow pets in the cabin or hold, there are exceptions you should know about. Here’s everything about the Ryanair pet policy, including flying with dogs and the rules for assistance animals.

Overview of Ryanair pet policy in 2026

Ryanair pet policy is very clear – no pets are allowed on board, neither in the cabin nor in the hold. That applies to all flights, all routes, and all animals, with one exception: certified assistance dogs.

So if you were hoping to fly with your dog or cat, Ryanair unfortunately won’t be an option for you. But the good news is there are plenty of pet-friendly airlines out there — and we’ve listed a few trusted ones further down to help you find the best fit for you!

— 🐾 Let’s Continue 🐾 —

Who can actually take dog on Ryanair flights

Ryanair doesn’t accept pets on board – neither in the cabin nor in the hold. The one and only exception being assistance dogs, and even those are only allowed on selected flights.

So if you’re traveling with a certified guide or assistance dog, you need to notify the airline in advance. For all other dogs, unfortunately, Ryanair isn’t an option.

Why Ryanair doesn’t allow pets in cabin or hold

Unlike many other airlines, Ryanair has a strict no-pets policy — both in the cabin and in the hold. The only exception is for assistance dogs as said earlier.

This pet policy is mostly caused by Ryanair’s ultra low-cost model of flying in general. The airline focuses on quick turnarounds and simplified operations, and adding pet handling would complicate logistics and of course increase costs.

Maybe one day Ryanair pet in cabin will be a reality, but currently it’s not a realistic option for those of us who fly with a dog.

Alternatives to Ryanair for pet travel

If you’re flying with a dog, Ryanair isn’t an option — but luckily, there are plenty of other airlines that are pet-friendly. We can recommend airlines such as Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, and Vueling, that allow pets in cabin on many of their flights.

You can find a list of dog-friendly airlines right below to help you choose the best one for your trip.

No, Ryanair does not allow pets on board — neither in the cabin nor in the cargo hold. The only exception is for certified guide and assistance dogs on select routes.
Why doesn’t Ryanair accept pets on board?

Unfortunately, flight duration doesn’t change the rule. Ryanair doesn’t allow any pets — even for short domestic flights. If you’re flying with a dog or cat, you’ll need to choose another airline.

Flying with a large dog internationally usually means one thing: the cargo hold. However K9 JETS has changed this by offering a “pay-by-seat” model on private heavy jets, allowing your pets to sit right by your side in the cabin.

What is K9 Jets & how does the public charter model work?

K9 JETS is not a traditional airline. They operate as a public charter broker, which means they do not own the aircraft themselves but arrange flights through licensed air carriers.

Unlike renting a full private jet which can cost upwards of $100,000, K9 JETS sells individual seats on scheduled routes. This makes luxury pet travel more accessible, though it definitely remains a premium service compared to commercial flying. See how it works, how much it costs and much more!

Quick facts for travelers

Model: Shared private jet charter (pay-by-seat).

Cost: Average $8,000 – $11,000 per seat (human + pet included).

Pet Policy: Pets stay in the cabin; no crates required for dogs, soft-sided bags for cats.

Weight Limits: 1 seat = 1 large dog (over 51 lbs) OR 2 small pets (under 50 lbs each).

Documentation: Owners are responsible for all international health certificates and entry permits.

Terminals: Flights depart from private FBO terminals, avoiding main airport crowds.

— 🐾 Let’s Continue 🐾 —

How K9 JETS works: Step-by-Step experience

One seat purchase includes space for one human passenger and one large dog weighing over 51 lbs (23 kg). If you are traveling with smaller pets weighing under 50 lbs (22.5 kg) each, your seat allows you to bring two animals at no extra cost. For owners with multiple large dogs, purchasing an additional seat is necessary to make sure there is enough floor space for everyone to travel comfortably.

On the day of travel, you arrive at a Private Terminal (FBO) about an hour before departure. There are no long security lines or noisy crowds. You simply check in, meet other pet owners, and walk directly onto the plane.

Once on board, the service is tailored to dog owners. The cabin is spacious, and the atmosphere is calm because every passenger is in the same boat—traveling with their furry friend.

K9 JETS Pet policy explained

The most important rule is that dogs are never caged. They can lay on the floor at your feet or even sit on the seat next to you if you use a protective cover. For dogs over 51 lbs (23 kg), one seat purchase covers one dog. If your dog is smaller—under 50 lbs (22.5 kg)—you can actually bring two pets per seat.

Cats are also welcome but must remain in a soft-sided carrier for safety during the flight.

There are no breed restrictions, which is a massive relief for owners of “bully breeds” or snub-nosed dogs that are often banned by commercial airlines.

Accepted animals on K9 JETS flights

🐶 Dogs: All breeds are welcome with no restrictions on “power breeds” or brachycephalic (snub-nosed) dogs.

🐱 Cats: Felines are welcome on all routes but must remain in a secure, soft-sided carrier for the duration of the flight.

🦮 Service animals: Fully trained service dogs are accepted and fly under the same cabin-sharing rules.

🐾 Other pets: While the focus is on dogs and cats, other small domestic pets may be considered on a case-by-case basis. You should contact K9 JETS directly before booking for birds or small mammals.

International pet travel documentation: The missing piece

While K9 JETS handles the flight perfectly, they do not manage your pet’s legal paperwork. Even on a private jet, it is you who must comply with the entry requirements of your destination country.

For flights to the UK or EU, you still need a Pet Health Certificate or an EU Pet Passport. You must also ensure your dog has a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination, and the mandatory tapeworm treatment (depending on your destination, find more info here) administered by a vet 24–120 hours before landing.

Always double-check these requirements weeks in advance. A seat on a jet won’t help you if the border authorities deny entry due to a missing signature on a health form.

Popular K9 Jets routes & expansion

The K9 JETS network focuses on the “heavy lifters”—the long routes where cargo travel is most exhausting for animals.

The Transatlantic Bridge: The most frequent route is between Teterboro (New Jersey) and Farnborough (London area). These flights run multiple times a month and are the backbone of the service.

European Hubs: They have established regular connections between the US and major European cities like Paris (Le Bourget), Milan (Malpensa), and Lisbon. These are vital for expats and military families moving to the continent.

The Middle East & Asia: The route to Dubai (Al Maktoum) has become increasingly popular for those moving between Europe and the UAE.

Recent Expansions: They have recently added Toronto to their North American network and frequently run “seasonal” routes to places like Geneva or various stops in Florida, depending on demand.

K9 JETS cost & pricing: Is it worth it?

A seat on a transatlantice flight typically costs between $8,000 and $10,000. It is expensive, but you have to weigh the cost against the alternatives. Shipping a large dog via cargo can cost between $3,000 and $6,000 and involves significant stress and potential health risks.

That said, it’s certainly a luxury—and we’ll explore whether it’s the right fit for you in this section.

K9 JETS vs. Commercial airlines vs. Bark Air

Commercial airlines are the cheapest option, but for large dogs, cargo is the only choice. This often leads to anxiety for both the owner and the pet.

Bark Air is a newer competitor that is even more “dog-centric,” offering things like “dog champagne” and pheromone-scented towels. However, K9 JETS currently has a wider variety of international routes and a more established schedule for long-haul relocations.

User reviews & Real-world experience

Most feedback from the community highlights the community aspect. Dogs tend to settle down quickly once the engines start, and seeing other calm dogs helps anxious travelers.

On the other hand the most common complaint is not the service itself, but how quickly seats sell out—often months in advance.

Who K9 JETS is for (and who it isn’t)

This service is a game-changer for specific types of travelers, but it isn’t the right fit for everyone.

It is for you if: You have a large dog breed that is banned from commercial cabins, you are relocating permanently across the ocean, or your pet has severe anxiety and cannot handle being separated from you. It is also the go-to choice for owners of snub-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds who want to avoid the respiratory risks associated with cargo travel.

It is not for you if: You are on a tight budget, or if you have a very small dog or cat that already fits comfortably in a carrier under a standard airplane seat. If your pet can fly for a +- €80 cabin fee on a commercial airline, paying this high-end price for a jet seat is likely unnecessary unless you specifically want the private experience.

Markéta’s final thoughts

“K9 JETS has filled a massive gap in the market. It is the best balance between the extreme cost of a full private charter and the risks of commercial cargo. If you are relocating across the ocean or moving abroad permanently, it is the gold standard for pet safety. Just remember: book early and stay on top of your vet paperwork.”

FAQ about K9 JETS pets travel

Here are the most common questions and our answers to get the most important information about K9 JETS.

How much does it cost to fly on K9 JETS?

Standard pricing for a seat on a transatlantic route usually falls between $8,000 and $11,000. This price includes the human passenger and one large dog (or two smaller pets). Prices vary based on the specific route and current demand, but the “pay-per-seat” model is the most cost-effective way to access a private cabin for your pet.

Are K9 JETS safe?

Yes, K9 JETS operates as a public charter broker and only partners with licensed aircraft operators that meet strict safety regulations, such as FAA Part 135. They utilize top-tier heavy jets like the Gulfstream IV or Bombardier Global Express, which are maintained to the highest industry standards for long-haul travel.

Is K9 JETS worth it?

The value depends on your dog’s needs and your budget. For owners of large breeds or snub-nosed dogs that are physically unable to fly in a commercial cabin, K9 JETS provides the only safe alternative to the cargo hold. When you factor in the peace of mind and the physical safety of your pet during a 10-hour flight, most users find the cost justifiable.

Do dogs need to be in a crate on K9 JETS?

No, dogs are not required to be in a crate. They can lie on the floor at your feet or sit on the seat next to you if you use a seat cover. This is one of the primary reasons owners choose this service over commercial cargo options. Cats, however, must remain in a soft-sided carrier for safety.

Can I fly with a large dog on K9 JETS?

Yes, K9 JETS is specifically designed for large dogs that cannot fit under the seat on a commercial flight. There are no weight limits for individual dogs, though you may need to purchase an additional seat if you are traveling with multiple large pets.

Are K9 JETS flights shared?

Yes, you are buying a seat on a shared flight with other pet owners. This is how the cost is kept lower than a private charter.

Iberia pet policy – Complete guide to flying with dogs and cats

Iberia is honestly one of our go-to pet friendly airlines when we’re heading towards Spain or South America. Their main base in Madrid is huge, but it’s actually one of the better places to be with a dog.

Unlike some other big carriers, Iberia keeps their pet rules pretty easy to follow. Here you can find all the current 2026 rules to keep you updated.

Summary of Iberia pet policy ›

— 🐾 Let’s Continue 🐾 —

1. Overview of Iberia’s pet policy

Accepted Travel Options:

✅ In cabin: Yes (dogs, cats, fish, turtles, and birds up to 8 kg including carrier and food)

✅ Checked baggage: Yes (for dogs and cats up to 45 kg including carrier and food)

✅ Cargo: Yes, pets exceeding 45 kg, or those required to travel as freight due to destination laws or breed restrictions

Cabin weight limit: Max 8 kg on all flights

Carrier size (in-cabin): 45 cm (L) x 35 cm (W) x 25 cm (H) (the sum of the three dimensions must not exceed 105 cm)

Minimum age: At least 12 weeks (for EU travel)

Main transit hub: Madrid-Barajas, Spain

2. Iberia pets in-cabin travel with dogs and cats

If you have a smaller dog, cat, ornamental fish, tortoise or bird (except poultry and birds of prey), you can have take them to the cabin with you, which makes Iberia one of the most pet-friendly airlines in Europe. The size limit for in cabin carrier is 45 x 35 x 25 cm.

We at the PetAbroad Team always recommend to use a soft-sided carrier. It’s way easier to squeeze under the seat than a hard plastic box, and your dog will probably find it more comfortable too. And in case you already have a rigid carrier, make sure that your flight is not operated by Air Nostrum as they do not accept this type of carrier.

When it comes to pricing it can differ based on your destination, but in general you pay around €40 for flights inside Spain, €60 for Europe, and about €180 or more for America and Asia flights.

3. Iberia Airlines pet policy in hold or cargo

Bigger dogs and cats that don’t fit to the 8kg limit for cabin, can travel either in hold or by cargo.

Iberia pets in hold

Dogs and cats up to 45 kg are transported in hold however there is an exception for snub-nosed dogs and “dangerous breeds” (you can find the full list of banned breeds here).

The price depends not only on your destination but also weight of your dog or cat, which is only fair! Here is what you can expect:

PET WEIGHT

SPAIN

CANARY ISLANDS, EUROPE, NORTH AFRICA, MIDDLE EAST

AMERICA, ASIA, DOHA

Up to 10 kg

€85

€125

€280

11 – 25 kg

€90

€135

€300

26 – 45 kg

€100

€145

€330

List of banned breeds for in hold travel

Dogs: Affenpinscher, American Staffordshire Terrier, Argentine Dogo, Boston Terrier, Boxer (all breeds), Brussels Griffon, Bulldog (all breeds), Brazilian Mastiff, Bull Mastiff, Canary Prey dog, Cane corso, Cavalier Spaniel, Chihuahua, Chow Chow, Doberman, Dogue de Bordeaux, English Toy Spaniel, Japanese Chin, Japanese Spaniel, King Charles Spaniel, Lhasa Apso, Maltese, Mastiff, Miniature Pinscher, Pekingese, Pit Bull, Pug, Rottweiler, Saint Bernard, Shar Pei, Shih Tzu, Tibetan Spaniel, Tosa and Akita, Yorkshire Terrier.

Cats: Burmese, Exotic Shorthair, Himalayan, Persian

Cargo

If for some reason your pet is not bale to travel in hold, you can use cargo. In this case you need to contact directly a cargo agent such as Woof Airlines. You will need information about your pet – age, weightm, height as well as size of your crate.

Your pet must travel in cargo if:

It has more than 45 kg,

Your destination has strict pet import rules,

Your dog’s/cat’s breed is restricted for in hold travel,

Is different species than Iberia accepts,

Is sent on his own.

4. Iberia Airlines pets booking

Booking your pet’s spot in cabin or in hold with Iberia is done only via their Offices at least 48 hours before your flight, however as we always say: the sooner the better!

Here’s how to book your pet with Iberia

Open the Iberia page – Booking offices,

Call the number based on your country,

Have prepared booking reference to add your pet to,

Tell the agent information about your pet, carrier size etc.,

Pay for the ticket either via sent link or at the airport.

5. Required documents to fly with Iberia

Iberia pet policy does not require to get a fit to fly certificate, however, of course, your pet must have rabies vaccine, the EU pet passport or EHC, and any other possible vaccination required by the destination country or tapeworm treatment for trips to Malta, Norway, Finland or Ireland.

6. Recommended travel gear for Iberia flights

When it comes to the size of soft bag carrier, Iberia is quite generous. The maximum limits are 45 cm (L) x 35 cm (W) x 25 cm (H) and it is important to keep in mind that the sum of the three dimensions must not exceed 105 cm.

If you are on the hunt for bags for your pet, you can check out these 5 options we put together!

7. Tips from travelers

When flying with Iberia, here is some advice for you and your furry friend. If you fly with your pet in cabin, try to snag a window seat (A or L); the floor space is usually a bit wider, which makes fitting the carrier much, much easier.

Also, a quick, friendly word to the flight attendant to confirm your dog is safely in the hold is totally normal on Iberia—just ask, it’s the best way to relax for the rest of the flight.

8. Pros & Cons of choosing Iberia pets travel

Pros:

Madrid Hub: Their main airport is very dog-friendly and well-equipped for pets in transit.

Reasonable Fees: Compared to other major carriers, their pet fees are quite fair and consistent.

Hold Safety: They have a good track record and clear protocols for dogs traveling as checked baggage.

Flexible In-Cabin Species: Besides dogs and cats, they are quite open to other small pets like birds or tortoises.

Experienced Staff: Because they handle so many pets daily, the ground crew usually knows exactly what to do with the paperwork.

Cons:

Manual Booking: You can’t book your pet online; you have to call their service center, which often means long wait times.

Strict Weight Limits: They are known to be quite firm about the 8 kg limit in the cabin, including the carrier.

ITA Airways dog cabin with prices

Small and medium dogs can travel in-cabin if the total weight, including the pet carrier and food, is up to 12 kg on domestic Italy flights or 10 kg on all other routes. Carriers must fit ITA’s size limits — 24 × 40 × 30 cm (domestic) or 20 × 40 × 20 cm (international) — and be placed under the seat.

The ITA Airways pet price is € 73 for domestic flights (reduced to € 59 on selected Sicily routes), € 95 for most Europe/North Africa routes, € 100 for Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, Senegal and Ghana, € 210 for North America, India and the Maldives, and € 230 for South America and Japan.

Booking must be made at least 48 hours before departure via the Customer Center or ticket office.

💡 Please note that while ITA Airways has officially increased these weight limits, the 8 kg restriction is still frequently enforced for long-haul flights (especially from the US).

ITA Airways large dogs in cabin

ITA Airways’ regular policy limits cabin pets to a maximum of 12 kg including the carrier and food, and this has been the rule for years. In May 2025, Italy’s civil aviation authority ENAC introduced a separate regulation allowing medium and large dogs to travel in the cabin on domestic Italy flights under certain conditions. These bigger dogs must be secured, must not block aisles or exits, and the airline must approve the request in advance.

In practice, this means the 12 kg limit still applies to most ITA Airways flights, especially international ones, but there is now a domestic exception for larger breeds.

NEWS! In the beginning of 2026 there has been an update in ENAC rules and now you can fly with a medium dog up to 30 kg in cabin – read here. ITA Airways does not officially offer this option but is open to it!

ITA Airways pet in hold/ cargo limits and price

If your dog is too big for the cabin, ITA Airways can take them in the hold as checked baggage – up to 75 kg including the crate – or as cargo. Either way you need an IATA-approved travel crate and also you have to book your pet’s spot at least 48 hours before the flight. However the earlier the better!

Also towards the end of 2025, ITA Airways no longer allows “snub-nosed” dogs like Pit Bulls, Bulldogs, or Pugs in the cargo hold. So even if your dog fits the weight limit, the airline won’t let them fly because of breathing risks. If you have one of these breeds and they are too big for the cabin, you can’t just add them to your ticket—you’ll have to go through a specialized cargo company instead.

Flight ticket prices for pets in the hold start at €95 within Italy, €150 for most of Europe and North Africa, €200 for Egypt and the Middle East, and if you are traveling further, expect to pay around €300–350. Cargo prices depend on your dog’s size, weight, and destination.

ITA Airways restricted breeds for in hold travel

Dogs: Affenpinscher, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Bichon Frise, Boston Terrier, Boxer, Brussels Griffon, Bulldog, Bullmastiff, Cane Corso, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chihuahua (apple-headed), Chow Chow, Dogo Argentino, Dogue de Bordeaux, English Mastiff, French Bulldog, Japanese Chin, King Charles Spaniel, Lhasa Apso, Maltese, Neapolitan Mastiff, Newfoundland, Pekingese, Presa Canario, Pug, Shar-Pei, Shih Tzu, Silky Terrier, Tibetan Spaniel, Valley Bulldog, Yorkshire Terrier.

Cats: Burmese, Exotic Shorthair, Persian, Himalayan.

How to book a flight for your dog

Whether your dog is flying in the cabin, in the hold, or as cargo, the booking process with ITA Airways is very similar. The main difference is the weight and crate requirements for each option.

So firstly secure your own ticket first, then add your dog to the booking with all the necessary details.

ITA Airways booking step by step

Book your own ticket.

For booking online: Use the “My Flights” section online to add your dog.

For booking via phone: Contact the ITA Airways Customer Center.

Provide necessary info about your pet such as weight and carrier dimensions.

Prepare the required health and travel documents.

Pay via sent link or at the airport.

ITA Airways dog travel documents

For all EU flights, your dog needs a valid EU Pet Passport as well as microchip, and rabies vaccination. Some destinations may require some extra vaccinations or treatments.

For non-EU travel, rules vary and may include a health certificate, import permits, or proof of parasite treatment – all depending on your destination.

Good news is that ITA Airways itself does not require a special form for pets on regular flights, but assistance dogs on certain routes, such as to the USA, may need a completed DOT form. And a heads up for 2026: if you are heading to the USA, don’t forget that every dog now needs a completed CDC Dog Import Form receipt to be allowed on board.

ITA Airways pet carrier limits

For in-cabin travel, the carrier must fit under the seat and meet ITA Airways’ size rules: up to 24 (H) × 40 (L) × 30 (W) cm on domestic Italy flights and 20 × 40 × 20 cm on international or intercontinental routes. The total weight (pet, carrier and food) must not exceed 12 kg on domestic flights or 10 kg on all others. You can find our recommended soft-sided bags here.

For ITA Airways pet travel we would recommend Petsfit carrier bag, however always measure your dog or cat to make sure it fits comfortably.

If your dog is flying in the hold, the crate and your pet together can weigh up to 75 kg. You’ll need IATA-approved crate made from strong plastic or wood, with secure metal or heavy-duty plastic doors and ventilation on at least three sides. The crate can be bigger if needed, but it still has to fit through the aircraft’s cargo door.

Tips and experience from travelers

As a team, we’ve flown with ITA Airways and our dogs more times than we can count, and over the years we’ve picked up a few things that don’t appear on the airline’s website.

One of the first lessons? Even if you’ve added your pet online, call to confirm the booking. On one trip, the pet reservation wasn’t showing at check-in, and that’s the last kind of surprise you want on travel day.

For in-cabin flights, we’ve found that seats away from the bulkhead often give you more space under the seat for the carrier. In the hold, we always bring a few extra zip ties to secure the crate doors — ground staff often add their own, but having yours means you can close everything exactly how you like it.

And finally, if you’re flying domestically in Italy with a bigger dog, it’s worth asking about the ENAC exception for large dogs in the cabin. Not all staff will bring it up, but it can be a game-changer if your dog usually exceeds the standard 12 kg cabin limit.

Pros & Cons of ITA Airways traveling with pets

Pros: ITA Airways really is pet-friendly airline and compare to other european companies offer relatively generous weight limits for in-cabin. The booking can be done online and customer service is usually responsive. The ENAC regulation allowing larger dogs in the cabin on domestic Italy flights is a real bonus if you have a medium-sized breed!

Cons: While ITA’s policy allows pets both in-cabin and in-hold, in practice there are limited spaces available per flight. We’ve learned from personal experience that early booking and direct confirmation with the airline are essential. Also keep in mind the 2025 update for the restricted breeds for in hold travel which affects many dogs and cats.

Complete guide of Emirates pet policy

Emirates is one of the most well-known airlines in the world, but when it comes to flying with pets, it’s far from ideal — especially compared to many European airlines and the western standards. There’s no option to fly with pets in the cabin (except for service dogs), the rules are strict, and breed restrictions apply even for pets traveling in the hold.

In this guide, we explain how pets can travel with Emirates, what isn’t allowed, and when SkyCargo is the only option, so you know exactly what to expect before booking.

1. Overview of Emirates airline pet policy

Accepted Travel Options:

❌ In cabin: No* (Only service dogs and falcons on selected routes are allowed)

❌ Checked baggage: No, Emirates does not generally accept pets as checked baggage. Most pets must travel via cargo.

✅ Cargo: Yes via Emirates SkyCargo

Minimum age: Usually 12 weeks, depending on destination and import regulations

Main transit hub: Dubai International Airport (DXB)

Banned breeds: Emirates applies strict breed restrictions. Some dog breeds are not accepted as checked baggage at all and must travel via cargo only. More here.

2. Emirates pets in-cabin policy

Emirates does not allow regular pets in the cabin, regardless of their size or weight. Even very small dogs that would normally fly under the seat on European airlines are not accepted.

However there are two exceptions. Certified service dogs may travel in the cabin on selected routes and falcons are allowed on certain routes, mainly in the Middle East and South Asia (for example Pakistan), under very specific conditions.

3. Dogs in hold or Emirates SkyCargo

When you fly with a dog or cat on Emirates flights, your pet will have to travel either as a checked beggage or via cargo.

In hold as checked baggage

Emirates is not only a pet friendly option when it comes to traveling with pet in cabin, similar approach applies also for your pet flying as checked baggage. Emirates say they maintain high safety standards for animals traveling in hold, and that reflects on the list of restricted breeds for this type of travel that is so much bigger than any other airline.

Also the price is more on the higher end ranging from $500 to $800 depending on the total weight. More on it here.

Emirates dog policy on restricted breeds for checked baggage (A-Z):

Emirates have very strict breed restrictions. Based on information shared with us by an Emirates agent, many dog breeds are not accepted even as checked baggage and therefore must fly via Emirates SkyCargo.

Affenpinscher, American Bully, American Cocker Spaniel, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Boerboel, Boston Terrier, Boxer, Brussels Griffon, Bulldog (all types), Bullmastiff, Bully Kutta (Alangu or Indian Mastiff), Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff), Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chihuahua (apple headed), Chow Chow, Dogo Argentino (Argentinian Mastiff), Dogue de Bordeaux (French Mastiff), Japanese Chin, Japanese Tosa, King Charles Spaniel, Lhasa Apso, Lowchen, Mastiff (all types and crosses), Neapolitan Mastiff, Newfoundland, Pekingese, Pit Bull Terrier, Presa Canario (including Perro de Presa Canario and Canary Mastiff), Pug (all types), Rottweiler, Shar-Pei, Shih Tzu, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Tibetan Mastiff, and Tibetan Spaniel.

Emirates pet travel fees for pets flying as checked baggage:

– Up to 23 kg (and 150 cm): $500 USD.
– 24 kg to 32 kg (up to 300 cm): $650 USD.
– Over 32 kg (up to 300 cm): $800 USD.
– Over 300 cm: Must be shipped as manifest cargo through SkyCargo.

Emirates pet travel in cargo

For many pet owners, Emirates SkyCargo is the only way to travel. SkyCargo is a completely separate shipment with its own airway bill, pricing, and professional logistics.

SkyCargo becomes mandatory in several situations:

if your pet is traveling to a country that doesn’t allow checked baggage arrivals (like the UK or Australia),

if the pet is traveling without its owner,

if the crate exceeds 300 cm in total dimensions,

or if the breed is on Emirates’ restricted list.

When it comes to pricing, SkyCargo charges often $1,500 to $5,000, depending on the route and the size of the animal.

SkyCargo has also a strict seasonal policy for snub-nosed breeds (typically November to April), meaning that some dogs and cats cannot fly during the hot months such as Bulldogs, Pugs,, Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apso, and many others.

4. Emirates pets booking process

Booking a pet flight with Emirates is not as simple as adding an extra suitcase to your ticket online. The process is manual and varies significantly depending on whether you are using the “In Hold” (as excess baggage) or “SkyCargo”.

Emirates pet travel booking for “in hold”

You cannot book this through the website. You must contact Emirates office or call center at least 48 hours before departure to request a space for your pet. However we recommend to do that much earlier if possible because there is a limit on the number of animals per flight.

After you answer their questions about type of pet, size and weight, you will probably also need to show them health certificate and other necessary permits or documents.

When your pet’s spot is booked, you can pay the fee either via sent link or at the airport on the day of your departure.

How to book Emirates SkyCargo

When booking Emirates SkyCargo, you have two options. You can contact an Emirates SkyCargo office directly or rather call a certified pet relocation agent (IPATA member). Many people prefer agents because, let’s be honest, the paperwork for cargo is very complex and they can also help you secure “Fit to Fly” approvals.

The next steps are:

You submit a request with pet details and flight dates.

You receive a price estimate based on the “chargeable weight” (a calculation of volume vs. actual weight).

You must submit all documents (photos of the pet in the crate, health certificates, and permits) at least 72 hours before the flight for final vetting.

When approved, you receive a PDF guide for the handover process.

5. Required documents

Emirates requires a few core documents for every pet. The most important is the Health Certificate from a licensed vet, for EU routes, this can be the EU Pet Passport. This part always depends on the country of origin and destination.

A “Fit to Fly” statement is mandatory and without it, Emirates can refuse boarding. There are also standard requirements such as microchip (ISO standard) and rabies certificate (administered at least 21 days before travel, but not more than a year prior).

If you fly to Dubai, you also need the UAE import permit. For SkyCargo, an Owner Acknowledgement Form is also required, and Emirates may ask for photos of the pet in its crate to ensure it meets their size and safety standards.

6. Emirates-approved pet crate

When choosing the right crate, you should focus on a few important things: it must be IATA approved, solid and hard-covered, Your pet must be able to stand up without touching the top, turn around comfortably and lie down naturally.

It also needs to have a proper ventilation, must be leak-proof and well secured with metal bolts. There also must be secure bowls for food and water inside that are easily accessible from outside but protected from spilling inside the cabin/cargo space. Another important thing is a quality bedding.

Does Emirates allow pets?

Yes, Emirates allows pets to travel, but they are generally not permitted in the passenger cabin. Most animals, including dogs and cats, must travel either as checked baggage in the cargo hold or through the Emirates SkyCargo service.

What are the requirements for a pet crate on Emirates?

Crates must be IATA-approved, rigid, and well-ventilated on all four sides. The container must be large enough for the pet to stand, turn, and lie down. For restricted breeds, Emirates may require crates to be at least 10% larger than standard to ensure better airflow.

Can pets fly in cabin to Dubai?

No, Emirates does not allow pets in the cabin on flights to Dubai, with the exception of trained service dogs or falcons on very specific routes from Pakistan. Furthermore, all pets whose final destination is Dubai must be processed as manifest cargo due to UAE government regulations.

Does Emirates allow any animals in the cabin?

Is Emirates good for dogs?

Technically, Emirates is very safe because they use climate-controlled holds and a dedicated “Pet Lounge” in Dubai for transits. However, they are not “pet-friendly” in the modern sense. They treat animals as cargo rather than family members, and their long list of banned breeds makes them one of the most restrictive airlines for dog owners.

This complete guide breaks down how to navigate their strict requirements.

Qatar Airways pet policy – Complete guide 2026

Flying with your pet on Qatar Airways is possible, although it’s not for everyone as dogs and cats are not allowed in the cabin. Qatar requires all pets to travel in the cargo hold, regardless of their size or weight.

The only exceptions being service dogs and falcons. If you are looking for a way to keep your dog under the seat, you’ll need a different airline. But if you want a carrier that treats your pet like a VIP during transit, this is a good bet. However we do not rate Qatar Airways as a pet-friendly airline due to the lack of in-cabin options.

1. Overview of Qatar Airways’s pet policy

Accepted Travel Options:

❌ In cabin: No* (Only falcons and service dogs are allowed)

✅ Checked baggage: Yes, for pets with total weight up to 75 kg (including carrier and food)

✅ Cargo: Yes, for pets exceeding 75 kg or traveling to specific destinations (e.g., UK, Hong Kong)

Minimum age: 12 weeks for most routes (Note: 7 months is required for entry into Qatar)

Main transit hub: Doha Hamad International (DOH)

Booking deadline: At least 48 hours before departure

Banned breeds: Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds

2. Qatar Airways pet in cabin

You won’t see any pets in cabin on Qatar Airways flights as they are not permitted regardless of the size and weight of the dog or cat. That means that even small pets must travel in hold as checked baggage or cargo.

The only exceptions are service dogs and falcons. Service dogs are allowed in the cabin free of charge on select routes including flights to the EU, USA, Canada, and Australia. Falcons are uniquely permitted but only in the Economy Class cabin, with a limit of one bird per passenger and six per aircraft. These animals must be hooded and tethered throughout the flight. Emotional support animals are not recognized for cabin travel and must fly in the hold.

Service dogs fly in the cabin completely free of charge on all permitted routes. For falcons, the flight ticket price depends on your destination and ranges from $115 to $630 per bird for travel in Economy Class.

3. Qatar Airways pet transport in hold and cargo

Since you can’t have a cat or dog in the cabin, they must travel in the hold or cargo often depending on the weight.

If your pet and crate weigh under 75 kg together, they can go as checked baggage. Anything heavier must be shipped as cargo as well as rabbits, hamsters, or ferrets. They are very strict about crates—they must be IATA-approved and “nose-proof” so the pet can’t stick its snout through the metal mesh.

The fee depends on the weight of your pet and also the destination. For most international flights you’ll pay $350 for a medium pet (up to 32 kg) or $450 if they are larger (up to 75 kg). If your pet is even heavier, you’ll need a custom quote for cargo.

4. How to book your pet with Qatar Airways

Booking your pet’s spot on Qatar Airways flights is old-school, so do not expect to simply add them in your online booking section. Here is a summary of all three ways of booking process for your pet:

Booking pets in cabin

You can’t just add service dogs or falcons to your booking online. You need to contact Qatar Airways directly or visit one of their offices at least 48 hours before you fly.

For service dogs, they will want to see training certificates and health papers right at the booking stage to guarantee the space. If you are taking a falcon, it’s best to call as soon as possible since there’s a strict limit of six birds per cabin.

EU PET-FRIENDLY AIRLINES

Booking Qatar Airways pets in hold

For pets traveling in the hold, you first need to have your own confiremed ticket. Once that’s done, you should either call their service center or visit their office and tell them the exact weight and dimensions of the crate.

Always wait for the final confirmation, as space is limited depending on the type of aircraft. You usually pay the fees for this at the airport check-in counter on the day of your flight.

Booking pets as cargo

If your pet is traveling as cargo—either because they are very large or traveling without you—the process goes entirely through the Qatar Airways Cargo department.

It’s handled separately from your own booking and the entire booking process takes place via the cargo service. You can find more information here.

5. Required documents

The most important document is a “Fit to Fly” health certificate signed by your vet. For Qatar Airways, this is usually only valid for 10 days from the date of issue, so don’t get it too early. Service dogs must have their official training credentials, while falcons require their own specific Falcon Passport for travel.

Other documents depend on your destination country. This usually includes a pet passport or an Animal Health Certificate (AHC), along with requirements like a microchip, rabies vaccination, import permits, or a rabies titer test.

6. Recommended crate for Qatar Airways flights

When flying with Qatar Airways, your crate must meet IATA standards, especially for the cargo hold. Because if the crate doesn’t meet limits, they can refuse to board your pet.

We recommend the SportsPet Design crate because its IATA-approved hard-shell construction and metal mesh meet Qatar Airways’ strict standards. It also features secure locking and attachable bowls.

When flying with Qatar Airways, always book night flights during summer – most importantly for the well-being of your pet and secondly to avoid heat-related boarding refusals during the Doha layover.

Also, since the pet fees are based on final weight of your crate, it’s good to keep a small financial buffer in your budget to cover any unexpected costs on the spot.

Another tip from real travelers is to ensure you get the confirmation of your pet’s flight as you can’t verify it online.
