Airlines don’t all stick to the same cabin bag sizes, so it’s really important to double-check the exact carrier dimensions allowed for your flight before you go. Each airline sets its own pet fee, and in most cases, the price stays the same no matter if you’re flying with a dog or a cat – as long as pets are allowed in the cabin.

Traveling “in hold” simply means your dog flies in the same plane as you — just in a special, climate-controlled section of the baggage area. It’s quiet, pressurized, and designed for safe animal transport. For many medium and large dogs, this is a common option, unless you travel in Italy, where a change occurred in May 2025 and larger dogs can travel in the cabin.

1. Lufthansa

Lufthansa is known for excellent care when flying pets in hold. Although you’ll hand over your pet before security, trained staff take over from there – and Frankfurt airport is one of the better hubs for animal handling on connecting flights.

KLM has a solid reputation when it comes to flying pets in the hold. Their booking process is clear, and at big hubs like Amsterdam Schiphol, check-in for pets is usually smooth and well-organized. The staff know how to handle animals with care, and the weight allowance is generous — up to 75 kg including the crate.

We’ve heard from several Pet Abroad travelers that their dogs arrived calm, safe, and well cared for. And honestly, knowing your dog is in good hands makes all the difference!

3. Air France

Air France is often mentioned as a solid choice for traveling with pets in hold. They allow dogs up to 75 kg (crate included) to fly in a temperature-controlled section of the hold. Booking is straightforward (just make sure to do it at least 24 hours in advance), and their staff is known for being kind and helpful — especially to nervous pet owners.

We came across a few stories from travelers on long-haul routes saying the process was smooth and their pets were well looked after from start to finish.

Pet in hold rules, restrictions, and what you’ll need

Flying your dog in the hold takes a bit more prep than cabin travel, but it’s totally doable. You’ll need a solid crate that meets airline rules, your dog has to be healthy and up to date on vaccines, and also keep in mind that some breeds (like short-nosed dogs) aren’t allowed.

Also most airlines have set a max weight (usually up to 75 kgs including the crate) and definitely require advance booking. And here’s something many people don’t expect: if it’s too hot or too cold at the airport, your dog might not be allowed to fly in the hold that day. It’s all about safety.

2. Finnair pet in cabin travel

Price for Finnair dog in cabin is € 60 per flight (in a case you book the flight for your pet less than 6 days before the planned departure, it costs € 65) when it comes to European flights. If you travel outside of Europe, incl. Middle East, the price rise up to € 120 (/€ 130 if you book your pet 6 or less days before departure).

Weight limit for the box including your pet is 8 kg and you can carry up to 2 pets there as long as they fit and the weight does not exceed the limit.

Finnair allows a maximum of two pets per flight, with one pet carrier per customer, so booking early gives you the best chance of availability.

Upcoming changes to pet travel in cabin in 2026

There are big chnages happening this year! Forget the 8 kg limit because Finnair is moving to a measuring tape strategy.

Our inside sources confirm that weight is becoming secondary to a strict 25 cm height limit for pets in the cabin. If your dog is taller than 25 cm, they are out, no matter how light they are.

This means you cannot fly with dogs or cats that exceed the height limit, and the result is that only the smallest of pets can travel with you, and even then, only barely. PetAbroad founder Markéta has already had her first taste of this, and you can read about her experience in the article here.

💡As for what we think about this change? We are 100% for pet safety, but we believe there are many other ways to ensure that, rather than further limiting the size of allowed pets, especially when the rest of the world is moving in a completely different direction.

3. Finnair flying with pets in hold or cargo

Pet flights in hold or cargo require a little more preparation than pet flights in cabin, so we have prepared all the important information for you right here.

a) Finnair flying with pets in hold

When booking pet in hold, make sure to do it as soon as possible (at least 7 days before departure). Finnair usually confirms a reservation within 2 days, for USA fligths at least 2 weeks before departure. If it is a longer flight with 1 or more connections, keep in mind that you need to have at least 3 hours between flights.

Finnair also put limits on the number of animals you can travel with: on flights operated by Finnair it’s 2 pets per person, on Norra flights it is only one. Also, it’s not possible to travel with a pet in hold if your ticket includes flights operated by other airlines than Finnair or Norra.

Weight limit for pet in the hold is maximum 75 kg (Finnair) or 50kg (Norra) incl. the container.

Tips for traveling with your pet in hold

As the space in holdcraft is air-conditioned and for safety reasons the temperature is above 10 degrees Celsius, we definitely recommend packing blankets for your dog in the crate. It is also important that your dog knows the crate well, so training is half the battle won.

The dog should also have access to water, so a sipper water bottle is a great choice as long as it knows how to use it. 🙂

b) Finnair pet cargo

You can ship your pet as a cargo via Finnair Cargo, the reservation must be done via forwarding company, eg Travelcargo – Pet Express.

Finnair Cargo only transports animals on direct selected routes, not via partner airlines. If your destination is Finland, pets can only be transported through Helsinki Airport.

4. Booking process

Booking process with Finnair is quite easy, even though could be even easier. However you can do it online, we’ll show you how to book a spot for pet in cabin as well as in hold/cargo.

All the bookings for pets are confirmed manually so make sure you receive the confirmation – you can also check it in “Manage booking”.

a) How to book Finnair pet in cabin for Economy

1. Start booking your flight.
2. During booking add a pet at “Travel extras” – “Pets in cabin”.
3. OR if your flight is already booked.
4. Go to “Manage booking”.
5. Add a pet to your booking.

If you do not see the option Pets in cabin, it means there’s no available space for your pet on this particular flight. You can check different time or day and may have more luck!

How to book a flight for your pet in cabin for Business

If you are flying Business and want to take your pet with you, the booking looks a little bit different compare to Economy class.

The reason is that Finnair needs to confirm if there’s no passenger flying Business with allergies as the cabin space is limited. So booking your pet in cabin for Business looks like this:

1. Book your flight ticket.
2. Call Finnair to add “pet in cabin” to your booking.
3. Provide necessary information such as type of animal, breed, etc.
4. Wait for the confirmation.
5. Pay the fee (you can do it online via link).
6. Once confirmed you can look forward to your flight!

How to book dog in hold with Finnair

1. Book your flight ticket.
2. Contact Finnair within 24 hours to add “pet in hold” via chat/by phone.
3. Provide the required information (about pet, breed, carrier size, weight,..).
4. Wait for the confirmation.
5. Pay the fee (usually via sent link).
6. Receive confirmation.
7. Done!

5. Required documents

On Finnair flights within Europe, you’ll need an EU Pet Passport. For flights to or from other regions, an EU Health Certificate is usually required. If you’re unsure which documents you need, check out our guide to pet travel documents .

If you’re traveling to Finland, Malta, Ireland, or Norway, make sure your dog has been treated for tapeworm. Also some destinations may require extra vaccines, even within Europe, even though travel rules are often the same across the EU, it can still happen that specific countries may have additional requirements.

The good thing about Finnair flying with pets is that you do not need a fit-to-fly certificate, which can make the process a bit easier.

Finnair is a solid option if you’re flying within Europe with a dog. Small pets are allowed in the cabin on most routes, and there’s no need for a fit-to-fly certificate. Booking is straightforward once space is confirmed, and Finnair’s network covers many big European destinations.

That said, there are some cons. First of all only two pets are allowed in the cabin per flight. Also if your flight is operated by Norra, the allowed carrier height is slightly smaller, which can catch people off guard. Costs are also on the higher end, especially for larger dogs that need to travel as checked baggage or cargo.

If you are planning to fly with your dog or cat, Eurowings makes it pretty simple, of course as long as you play by their rules. Even though they are pet friendly airline, they can be quite strict about carrier sizes, weight limits, and having the exact paperwork ready at the check-in desk.

Here is a quick breakdown of the fees, dimensions, and steps you need to take to get your pet on board.

2. Eurowings pet in cabin

Eurowings pet in cabin service is limited to cats and dogs only with max weight 8 kg, including their carrier (maximum dimensions are 55 x 40 x 23 cm) and each passenger can bring only one pet carrier with him.

This airline strictly prohibits hard crates, so always choose soft sided bags. Inside the carrier, your dog or cat must be able to stand, turn, and lie down in a natural position. During the flight, the bag must remain closed and stowed under the seat in front of the passenger. Animals are not allowed on seats or in the laps of passengers.

Eurowings permits snub-nosed breeds like Pugs or French Bulldogs in the cabin, of course in the case they meet the weight criteria.

3. Eurowings pets in hold or cargo

The Eurowings airline does not transport pets in the hold or as cargo. So if your pet is bigger than 8 kg and cannot travel with you in cabin, you can’t take your dog or cat on Eurowings flights.

4. Booking process

The easiest way to book a flight ticket for your pet is selecting the pet option during an online reservation under the “Passengers” section.

If you already have booking, the service can be added via the “Manage Booking” tool or through the call center.

The fee starts at 60 EUR per flight segment. Passengers must also download and complete the Eurowings “transportation of a dog/cat in the cabin” form and present it at the check-in counter before departure.

5. Required documents

As mentioned in the previous paragraph, every passenger must present a signed copy of the “Transportation of an animal in the cabin” form at the check-in desk. This document confirms the pet meets all health and safety requirements.

For travel inside the EU, you’ll need a valid EU Pet Passport, microchip, and rabies vaccination as these are mandatory. Also note that while the general minimum age is 12 weeks, pets flying to or from Germany must be at least 15 weeks old.

When you’re flying with Eurowings, you don’t want to overpack, but you definitely need a few essentials to keep your pet comfortable and make sure you don’t get turned away at the gate.

Here is the basic gear you will actually need:

• A reliable soft-sided carrier: This is your most important piece of gear. Eurowings only allows soft bags in the cabin, and they are super strict about the 55 x 40 x 23 cm dimensions since it has to fit under the seat in front of you. • Absorbent pee pads: Even if your dog or cat is perfectly house-trained, airport stress or flight delays can cause accidents. Line the bottom of the carrier with a good pee pad and throw two or three extra ones into your backpack just in case you need a quick swap.
• Collapsible bowls and a travel bottle: Regular bowls are too bulky for travel. Pack a flat-folding silicone bowl and a leak-proof water bottle so you can easily give your pet a drink at the terminal before boarding or right after you land.
• Something that smells like home: The loud jet engines and cabin pressure can be pretty scary for pets. Tossing a familiar blanket or one of your old t-shirts into the carrier helps them feel safe.

Online check-in is restricted for pet owners, so it’s good to arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure. You must show your pet and all documents at the physical counter.

9. FAQ about Eurowings airline pet policy

Official EasyJet pet policy overview

EasyJet does not allow pets on any of their flights. You cannot travel with a dog, cat, or any other regular animal in the cabin or in the cargo hold. There is no option to pay an extra fee to add a pet to your booking.

The one and only exception to this rule is for certified assistance and guide dogs. If you want to travel with a standard pet, you must choose a different airline. You can find all the pet-friendly airlines here.

Rules for pets in cabin and cargo hold

The no pet policy does not only applies to in cabin travel, but also for in hold and cargo. EasyJet simply is a low-cost airline and does not operate cargo facilities for live animals. Because they completely lack this specialized infrastructure, placing a dog or cat in the belly of the plane is impossible.

Since you cannot use the hold and you are not allowed to bring an easyjet pet in cabin, there are simply zero transport options for standard pets on these flights.

Flying with an approved EasyJet assistance dog

The single exception to the airline’s rule applies to a certified easyjet assistance dog. These legally recognized dogs are allowed to travel in the cabin free of charge, sitting on the floor at your feet.

However, you must know that this privilege does not extend to emotional support or therapy animals. EasyJet does not recognize emotional support dogs under any circumstances. They classify them as standard easyjet dogs on board, meaning they are completely banned from flights.

To legally qualify for travel, your guide or assistance dog must be officially trained and registered by a recognized organization, such as Assistance Dogs International (ADI) or the International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF).

Pet friendly alternatives to EasyJet

Since EasyJet operates heavily in the UK, you must understand British pet travel rules. UK regulations strictly prohibit pets from entering the country in the cabin. Any dog or cat flying into the United Kingdom must arrive as manifest cargo, meaning you need traditional carriers like British Airways or KLM.

To avoid the high costs and stress of cargo flights, the best alternatives for UK routes are surface transport options. Booking the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle or a pet-friendly ferry cabin with Brittany Ferries or DFDS allows your pet to stay safely by your side for the entire journey.

ITA Airways’ regular policy limits cabin pets to a maximum of 12 kg including the carrier and food, and this has been the rule for years. In May 2025, Italy’s civil aviation authority ENAC introduced a separate regulation allowing medium and large dogs to travel in the cabin on domestic Italy flights under certain conditions. These bigger dogs must be secured, must not block aisles or exits, and the airline must approve the request in advance.

In practice, this means the 12 kg limit still applies to most ITA Airways flights, especially international ones, but there is now a domestic exception for larger breeds.

NEWS! In the beginning of 2026 there has been an update in ENAC rules and now you can fly with a medium dog up to 30 kg in cabin – read here. ITA Airways does not officially offer this option but is open to it!

If your dog is too big for the cabin, ITA Airways can take them in the hold as checked baggage – up to 75 kg including the crate – or as cargo. Either way you need an IATA-approved travel crate and also you have to book your pet’s spot at least 48 hours before the flight. However the earlier the better!

Also towards the end of 2025, ITA Airways no longer allows “snub-nosed” dogs like Pit Bulls, Bulldogs, or Pugs in the cargo hold. So even if your dog fits the weight limit, the airline won’t let them fly because of breathing risks. If you have one of these breeds and they are too big for the cabin, you can’t just add them to your ticket—you’ll have to go through a specialized cargo company instead.

Flight ticket prices for pets in the hold start at €95 within Italy, €150 for most of Europe and North Africa, €200 for Egypt and the Middle East, and if you are traveling further, expect to pay around €300–350. Cargo prices depend on your dog’s size, weight, and destination.
